Each country shaped the tradition differently: in Portugal the equestrian element remained central, in France it became more theatrical, and in Latin America it intertwined with religious and civic festivities, gaining an even broader social dimension. <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"structure_and_characters\"><\/span><strong>Structure and characters <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Bullfighting is a <strong>ritualized <\/strong>performance, carefully structured in stages with clearly defined roles. At the center of the arena are the <strong>matador<\/strong> &#8211; Spanish for \u201ckiller\u201d &#8211; and the bull. The <em>matador <\/em>is the undisputed protagonist, responsible for directing the spectacle, confronting the animal, and bringing the contest to its conclusion.  <\/p>\n<p>Other figures play crucial supporting roles. The <strong>picadores <\/strong>(from <em>picar<\/em>, \u201cto prick\u201d) are mounted fighters armed with long lances, tasked with weakening the bull\u2019s muscles and slowing its initial charge. The <strong>banderilleros <\/strong>(from <em>banderilla<\/em>, \u201clittle flag\u201d) work on foot with agility, planting brightly decorated barbed sticks into the bull to spur its movements and further control its strength.    <\/p>\n<p>The bulls themselves are almost always of the <strong>Toro Bravo breed<\/strong>, raised in Spain through traditional methods that emphasize power, stamina, and temperament. In <strong>Spain<\/strong>, its birthplace, it remains especially prominent in regions like <strong>Andalusia<\/strong>, <strong>Castile-La Mancha<\/strong>, <strong>Madrid<\/strong>, and <strong>Valencia<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Portugal<\/strong>, the tradition evolved into a more acrobatic and animal-respecting version. The bull is not killed in the arena, and the <em><strong>cavaleiro <\/strong><\/em>(horseman) performs on horseback while groups of men known as forcados face the bull on foot with their own daring techniques\u2014particularly in <strong>Alentejo <\/strong>and <strong>Algarve<\/strong>.<br \/>In southern <strong>France<\/strong>, in cities such as <strong>N\u00eemes<\/strong>, <strong>Arles<\/strong>, and <strong>Bayonne<\/strong>, the Spanish-style corrida is practiced alongside less violent variants like the <em><strong>course camarguaise,<\/strong><\/em> in which the bull is unharmed and the focus shifts to the agility and skill of the participants.    <\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Latin America<\/strong>, bullfighting was woven into the fabric of local festivities. In <strong>Mexico <\/strong>and <strong>Colombia <\/strong>&#8211; especially in <strong>Mexico City<\/strong>, <strong>Guadalajara<\/strong>, <strong>Bogot\u00e1<\/strong>, and <strong>Cali<\/strong> &#8211; corridas are held as part of religious and civic celebrations, accompanied by <strong>music<\/strong>, <strong>costumes<\/strong>, and rituals that enhance their communal dimension. In <strong>Peru<\/strong>, particularly in <strong>Lima <\/strong>and <strong>Trujillo<\/strong>, they are closely tied to patronal festivals and regional traditions.  <\/p>\n<p>In recent years, so-called \u201c<strong>ethical\u201d corridas<\/strong> or <strong>eco-corridas<\/strong> have emerged, where the bull is not seriously harmed. These spectacles highlight <strong>choreography<\/strong> and the toreros\u2019 <strong>artistry<\/strong>, attempting to reconcile modern sensitivities with historical tradition.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, bull-related rituals also appeared in parts of <strong>North Africa <\/strong>and <strong>Mediterranean <\/strong>islands such as <strong>Sicily <\/strong>and <strong>Sardinia<\/strong>, where local festivals and civic events testify to the wide diffusion of the practice.<\/p>\n<p>These variations show how, while deeply Spanish at its core, bullfighting has adapted across continents, blending <strong>spectacle<\/strong>, <strong>ritual<\/strong>, and <strong>local identity<\/strong> into a global cultural phenomenon.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"controversy_and_debate\"><\/span><strong>Controversy and debate<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Despite its historical and cultural weight, <em>bullfighting <\/em>remains one of the most debated traditions. Critics focus on animal suffering and the ethical implications of the bull\u2019s death. In many countries, animal rights groups have won restrictions or outright bans. Supporters, on the other hand, defend <em>bullfighting<\/em> as <strong>cultural heritage<\/strong>, inseparable from history and identity.
