From every point of view, 2020 has been an unforgettable year. For Ubisoft, however, especially in the end, it was a turning point, thanks to two titles: Immortals Fenyx Rising and a new Assassin’s Creed. The latter, Valhalla, was a lucky title that, for the first time in the history of the videogame saga, received 24 months of updates, two years of content that saw Eivor’s long story come to a close a few months ago .
A month after the release of Valhalla, however, Ubisoft has “relaunched” the wonderful settings of ancient Greece, already popular thanks to the previous chapter of Assassin’s Creed, Odyssey, with a totally new game: Immortals Fenyx Rising. Less known but with very colorful tones and a unique irony, myth and action blend perfectly, engaging even the most skeptical players.
Returning to ancient Greece, by mistake
The genesis of Immortals Fenyx Rising is quite curious: developed by the Québec division of Ubisoft, the game was born from a bug related to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (which came from the same game developing house), which transformed the crew of the Adrestia, the ship of the protagonist, in gigantic figures.
Since these are beings that are part of Greek mythology, the development house has therefore decided to stay a little longer in ancient Greece, telling a completely new and different story. The protagonist of this adventure is Fenyx, completely customizable by the player: the only survivor of a shipwreck, the heroine will find herself on the Golden Island, attacked by the giant Typhoon.
The situation that Fenyx finds before her is terrible: the monstrous creature has not simply attacked the Island, but has turned its inhabitants into stone. Furthermore, he has defeated some of the most famous Greek gods, turning them into their exact opposites.
The self-centered and passionate Venus therefore becomes a tree eager to help others; the emotional Hephaestus is transformed into an emotionless robot, the wise Athena becomes a child without judgment, and the mighty Ares is transformed, in every sense, into a chicken.
Through numerous vicissitudes and puzzles that the main character experience between the Golden Island and Tartarus, Fenyx will be able to help the lost gods, before facing the fearsome Typhoon. But there will be twists and turns; everything will be told by an excellent narrator, Prometheus, to a sharp and ironic Zeus, both listener and anti-narrator.
Immortals Fenyx Rising’s DLC and its possible future
Once the main story of the game is over, fans will be able to continue the story of the heroine in two downloadable contents: “A New God” and “The Lost Gods”; in the latter the player will have control, however, of Ash, a new and young heroine inspired by the exploits of Fenyx, who can be driven under a new innovative point of view.
There is also a third content: “Myths of the Eastern Realm”. It is a new game, with a shorter duration and, above all, with a different setting. The protagonist, this time, will be a boy (not editable): Ku. Having survived a cataclysm caused by the opening of a rift between Tian (heaven) and Earth, the young hero will set out to remedy this damage, helping the maternal deity Nuwa and the cunning hero Lord Gong Gong. As with Fenyx, even with Ku the player will have the chance to fight mystical creatures, this time belonging to Chinese mythology.
The reception of Immortals Fenyx Rising has been excellent: for this reason, although there is nothing officially announced yet, it is rumored that Ubisoft is working on a sequel. The only existing evidence of this news is a leaked image, which show improved graphics, based on another mythology and culture: the Polynesian one.
However, nothing else has been disclosed to the large audience of gamers, who continue to wait, intrepid, for news. In the meantime, the adventure of Fenyx can only be relived: the many topics covered, the irony and the puzzles are excellent adventure companions for an evening of disengaged and cheerful gaming.
