The Avignon Festival: A History of Popular Theatre and Innovation
Each summer, the Avignon Festival transforms the French city into a living theatrical laboratory, becoming a key landmark in the European cultural landscape. Founded in 1947 thanks to the vision of Jean Vilar, the festival revolutionized the concept of theater by taking it out of aristocratic halls and bringing it into squares, courtyards, cloisters, and unconventional spaces. This paradigm shift made theatre accessible to a broader and more diverse audience, breathing new life into an art form once reserved for the few.
At the heart of the festival is the evocative Cour d’Honneur of the Palace of the Popes, one of the largest open-air stages in Europe. This grand Gothic complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a unique setting that combines historical grandeur with the vitality of contemporary theatre. Beyond the Cour d’Honneur, the festival takes place in more than 30 venues across Avignon and the surrounding region, from historic theatres to gardens, natural quarries, chapels, and courtyards—creating an immersive and unparalleled experience.
Each year, the Avignon Festival attracts around 120,000 spectators with over 400 events, including theatrical performances, dance shows, concerts, readings, and debates. The variety and quality of its programming reflect the festival’s ability to evolve while remaining true to its mission: engaging both the city and the public with high-impact cultural content.
Festival “In” and Festival “Off”: Two Faces of the Same Creative Energy
What makes the Avignon Festival truly unique is its dual structure: the Festival In and the Festival Off.
The Festival In is the official selection, curated by an artistic direction that carefully chooses high-quality productions. It features major international theatre companies, world premieres, and reflections on social, cultural, and environmental issues. The program ranges from classical to contemporary theatre, from dance to the most innovative performing arts, solidifying the festival’s international prestige.
Alongside the official lineup, the Festival Off emerged in 1966 thanks to André Benedetto, as a response to traditional theatre. It has no artistic director and functions independently. Over 1,000 companies rent open venues and present more than 1,200 shows annually. Its energy comes from experimentation, informality, and the opportunity to showcase new talents and unconventional narratives.
Young artists and emerging theatre companies use the Off as a springboard, often experimenting with new technologies and interdisciplinary languages. This dual identity makes Avignon the European capital of contemporary theatre, where tradition and innovation coexist and enrich each other.
The Avignon Festival 2025
The 79th edition of the Avignon Festival, taking place from July 5 to 26, 2025, will be directed by Tiago Rodrigues—a Portuguese playwright, poet, director, and actor known for his artistic sensibility and social engagement. Leading the festival since 2022, Rodrigues offers a vision that intertwines memory, history, heritage, future, and innovation, with a strong focus on ecology and accessibility.
The 2025 program will feature new productions by emerging playwrights and interactive performances that incorporate immersive digital technologies. Internationally renowned artists scheduled to perform include Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, the acclaimed Belgian choreographer; Israel Galván, the flamenco dance innovator; and Mohamed El Khatib, a French director of Moroccan descent known for his intense and provocative work. The Arabic language will be honored this year, in collaboration with the Institut du Monde Arabe
Attending the Avignon Festival means immersing yourself in a cultural experience that engages the entire city—from historic monuments to cafés, through spontaneous performances, debates, and artistic encounters—creating a vibrant, participatory event that renews itself year after year.
